Influencer Papaya Ex Claims Police Assault in Lagos, Sparks Online Debate

Nigerian social media influencer and content creator, Abike Raheem, popularly known as Papaya Ex, has accused a police officer of assault during a late-night encounter in Ajah, Lagos State.

The influencer made the allegation during a TikTok live session on Friday, claiming the officer engaged in physical violence and inappropriate conduct while she was returning home from a shoot. According to her, what began as a routine stop quickly escalated into a confrontation.

Papaya Ex alleged that the officer struck her face with a gun, assaulted her driver, and made unwanted physical contact. Although the incident was not recorded on video—she attributed this to network issues—she displayed visible injuries during the live broadcast, including a wound mark on her face.

She further claimed the officer slapped her, struck her buttocks and breasts, and forcibly confiscated her mobile phone. Videos circulating online captured a heated verbal exchange, though the full context and authenticity of the claims could not be independently verified at the time of reporting.

During the live session, Papaya Ex described harassment by police officers as a recurring problem in the Ajah area, stressing that residents frequently face intimidation. She noted that she was returning from a movie set when the alleged assault occurred.

The incident has prompted widespread reactions on social media, with many users expressing concern and outrage over the allegations. Calls for a thorough investigation into the claims have grown louder, highlighting ongoing concerns about police conduct in Lagos State.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Command has not released an official statement regarding the alleged assault.

The episode adds to the public discourse on accountability and police behavior in Nigeria, as citizens and advocacy groups continue to demand justice for victims of harassment and violence.
