National News – Tension erupted at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Oru-Ijebu, Ogun State, after the students’ union accused officers of the Nigeria Police Force of assaulting student leaders and firing gunshots at unarmed protesters.

The confrontation reportedly occurred on Saturday at the Oru-Ijebu Police Station when students gathered to question the arrest of some of their colleagues under what they described as unclear circumstances.

According to the Students’ Union Government of the university, the incident began when the union’s Legal Director visited the police station to verify claims that some students had been detained.

The union said the official was allegedly attacked by officers while carrying out his duty.

In a statement jointly signed by the SUG President, Kehinde Bamigbose, and the General Secretary, Olajire Emmanuel, the union claimed the Legal Director was physically assaulted, kicked and choked by police officers during the visit.

Another student who accompanied him was also reportedly slapped.

The statement explained that student leaders later arrived at the station to calm the situation and demand clarification from the police.

However, the union alleged that officers responded with force rather than dialogue.

The students claimed police officers opened fire on the protesters despite the gathering being peaceful.

During the chaos, the union said a student was shot in the hand while several others were beaten and arrested.

It also alleged that continuous gunfire created panic among students and residents around the area.

The union described the incident as an abuse of power and called for immediate action from authorities.

Among its demands were a full investigation into the incident, prosecution of officers involved, compensation and medical care for injured students, and the unconditional release of those allegedly detained.

However, the Ogun State Police Command denied the allegations. Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi said no student was detained during the confrontation and rejected claims that officers opened fire on the protesters.

The incident has since sparked debate, with conflicting accounts from both the students and the police regarding what actually happened at the Oru-Ijebu Police Division.
