Raheem Sterling Joins Feyenoord in Surprise Eredivisie Move

Former England international Raheem Sterling has completed a move to Dutch giants Feyenoord, signing a contract until the end of the season. The 31-year-old winger left Chelsea in January by mutual consent after reaching a settlement covering the remaining 18 months of his Stamford Bridge contract, reportedly worth over £300,000 per week.

After leaving Chelsea, Sterling explored options across England and Europe before ultimately choosing Feyenoord, who are currently second in the Eredivisie under former Dutch international striker Robin van Persie.

Speaking after the transfer, Sterling said:

“As a free agent, I’ve had the opportunity to control the next step in my career. I wanted to take my time speaking with clubs and their head coaches to understand the role they envisioned for me. After discussing in detail with Robin, I’m confident Feyenoord is the right place to establish myself and add real value. Playing abroad is a new challenge – one I’m ready to embrace.”

Feyenoord, 17 points behind league leaders PSV, hope Sterling’s experience in top-flight football will strengthen their push for Champions League qualification. Van Persie praised the winger, stating:

“Convincing a player of Raheem’s calibre to join us is a fantastic achievement. His qualities can change games, and I’m confident he will be a key asset as we aim to reach our season goals.”

Sterling’s move also marks a fresh start after a challenging spell at Chelsea. Joining from Manchester City in July 2022, he played in 59 of 76 Premier League matches under four managers. However, under Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, Sterling was loaned to Arsenal, and later made available for transfer in the club’s “bomb squad.”

With his new chapter at Feyenoord, Sterling is ready to rebuild his career and make a fresh impact in the Eredivisie, bringing his Premier League experience to the Dutch league and aiming to contribute to the club’s European ambitions.
