National News – Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has strongly condemned the assault and humiliation of women and girls during the Alue-Do Festival in Ozoro, located in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the First Lady described disturbing viral videos from the festival as “horrific” and “barbaric,” noting that the actions captured in the footage represent a serious violation of human dignity and fundamental rights.
The clips circulating online show groups of young men chasing women and female students, tearing their clothes, groping them, and subjecting them to degrading treatment during what was meant to be a cultural celebration.
Tinubu emphasised that while Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage deserves respect and preservation, no tradition or customary practice should be used to justify violence or abuse against women.
She stressed that protecting the dignity, safety, and freedom of women and girls must remain a priority in every community.
According to the First Lady, any cultural event that leads to harassment or sexual assault cannot be defended under the guise of tradition.
She therefore called on authorities to ensure that those responsible for the attacks face justice and that such incidents are never repeated.
She also commended the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force for acting swiftly following the public outcry.
Law enforcement authorities confirmed that at least 15 suspects have already been arrested in connection with the assaults, including a community leader.
The incident reportedly occurred during the annual Alue-Do Festival in Ozoro, a traditional gathering that draws residents and visitors to celebrate local customs.
Reports indicated that the festival includes certain rites that temporarily restrict women’s movement during specific hours.
However, local authorities insist the violent attacks seen in the videos were not part of the authentic cultural practice.
Leaders of the Ozoro Kingdom have also distanced the community’s traditions from the assault, stating that criminal elements hijacked the event to perpetrate acts of violence.
Tinubu further encouraged victims to seek medical attention and psychological support, assuring them that the nation stands with them during this difficult time.
She expressed hope that justice and healing would follow the traumatic incident.
