Suspected bandits have reportedly killed Oba Kehinde Falodun, the monarch of Agamọ Community in Akure North Local Government Area, Ondo State, in a violent palace attack on Wednesday evening.
According to sources, about 10 armed men stormed the palace, attempting to abduct the traditional ruler. Oba Falodun resisted, and the assailants allegedly fired several shots that reportedly did not penetrate him. They then struck him on the head with a heavy object, resulting in his death.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, the Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, Mr. Abayomi Jimoh, said that investigations had commenced. “The victim was later found a few metres from the palace with gunshot wounds and was confirmed dead at the scene. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects,” he stated.
Police, in collaboration with local security operatives including Amotekun, Atuluse Security, and community hunters, have intensified patrols and surveillance in surrounding areas. “Monitoring activities have been strengthened to ensure residents’ safety and prevent further lawlessness,” Jimoh added.
The killing comes weeks after suspected bandits attacked Ayede Community, also in Akure North, abducting a pregnant woman, Mrs. Mary Jesulayomi, who was later released after a ransom was reportedly paid. Following that incident, the Ondo State Security Network Agency (Amotekun) arrested 12 suspected bandits in the area.
Residents of Akure North have expressed growing concern over escalating insecurity, urging authorities to intensify measures to restore peace. Analysts warn that repeated attacks on traditional leaders and civilians could destabilize communities if urgent action is not taken.
Authorities have assured the public that no stone will be left unturned in bringing Oba Falodun’s killers to justice. Meanwhile, security forces continue to comb surrounding bushes and areas in a bid to apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
