Lagos is set to host one of its largest youth football events as 56 grassroots football clubs prepare to compete in the 10th edition of the Taiwo Afolabi U-17 Football Cup, kicking off today. Organized by the Lagos State Grassroots Soccer Association (LSGSA) and sponsored by SIFAX Group, the tournament features 32 male teams and 24 female teams, making it a key platform for identifying Nigeria’s future football stars.
The tournament, held in honour of Dr Taiwo Afolabi, Chairman of SIFAX Group, has spent a decade shaping young talents, providing structured competition, and offering exposure to professional football pathways.
Venues and Schedule
Preliminary matches will take place at:
Ojo Oniyun Sports Centre, Ebute Metta
Anthony Mini Stadium, Gbagada
The grand finale is scheduled for May 2, 2026, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
Building Nigeria’s Football Future
Speaking at the tournament’s press launch, Afuka Abu, Assistant Secretary of LSGSA, highlighted its track record in youth development:
“This tournament provides young players with the structure, exposure, and discipline needed to progress to higher levels. Many participants have advanced to national teams and professional clubs, and our mission is to give every talented child a real opportunity.”
SIFAX Group has sponsored the cup for ten years as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility commitment to youth empowerment and community growth. Oliver Omajuwa, Deputy Director of Strategy and Operations at SIFAX Group, added:
“Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. This tournament is a platform for discovery, development, and hope — far beyond a one-time competition.”
