Nollywood actress Teniola Aladese has openly criticised societal expectations that place domestic responsibilities almost entirely on women, calling for a more balanced and fair approach to household chores.

Speaking on the That’s What She Said vodcast, the actress questioned why tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and washing dishes are still widely seen as a woman’s duty. Her comments have sparked renewed conversations about gender stereotypes in domestic work and the need for equality within modern homes.

“Why can’t a man wash a plate? Why do we keep perpetuating these gender stereotypes?” she asked during the interview. Teniola expressed frustration over what she described as outdated norms that expect women to manage the home front regardless of their professional commitments.

According to her, today’s reality is far different from traditional assumptions. Women now actively pursue careers, run businesses, and contribute financially to their households just as much as men. Despite this, many are still expected to return home and handle the bulk of domestic chores without shared support.

“A woman will cook, wash plates, and the man will just work. But women also work. We hustle just like them. Why is it that the moment we come home, it’s the woman who has to do everything?” she questioned.

Teniola emphasised the importance of shared household responsibilities, noting that fairness in relationships should extend beyond finances to daily domestic tasks. She urged couples to embrace partnership and mutual support rather than rigid gender roles.

Her remarks align with the growing advocacy for gender equality at home, reinforcing the message that domestic work should be a shared commitment, not a gender-based obligation.
