President Bola Tinubu has officially accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
The development marks a significant leadership transition within the Nigeria Police Force, coming at a time of heightened national security concerns.
Why Egbetokun Resigned as IGP
Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023 for a four-year tenure scheduled to end in June 2027 under the amended Police Act, tendered his resignation citing pressing family considerations.
In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service.
He commended the outgoing police chief’s professionalism, dedication, and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture.
The presidency noted that Egbetokun’s tenure contributed to reforms and operational improvements within the police system.
Tunji Disu Named Acting Inspector-General of Police
Following the resignation, Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu was appointed as Acting IGP.
According to the presidency, Disu’s operational depth, leadership experience, and track record position him to provide steady direction during this critical period.
In compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police.
His name will subsequently be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
What This Means for Nigeria’s Security
The leadership change signals the Tinubu administration’s continued focus on strengthening national security and enhancing institutional capacity.
With security challenges persisting across various regions, the appointment of a new police chief is expected to influence policing strategy, crime prevention efforts, and overall public safety reforms.
As Nigeria navigates evolving security dynamics, attention now shifts to how Acting IGP Tunji Disu will shape the next phase of police leadership.
