National News – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the creation of a special fund to support Nigeria’s Armed Forces, including wounded soldiers and families of personnel who died in service.

The announcement was made on Sunday, March 29, 2026, as the President marked his 74th birthday.

According to the presidency, the initiative aims to strengthen welfare support for military personnel who risk their lives defending the country.

Tinubu revealed that he had directed the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to establish a dedicated account for the Armed Forces Support Fund.

The account will serve as a financial platform to assist military personnel injured during operations and the dependents of soldiers who lost their lives while protecting the nation.

Explaining the motivation behind the initiative, the President said the move was intended to recognise the sacrifices of Nigeria’s armed forces and provide additional support beyond existing welfare and insurance structures.

He emphasised that the well-being of soldiers and their families remains a national responsibility that must not be ignored.

As part of his personal contribution, Tinubu pledged to donate all the salaries he has earned since assuming office as President into the fund as seed capital.

He said the gesture was meant to demonstrate commitment and encourage others to contribute to the welfare of military personnel.

The President also called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, private sector leaders, and well-meaning Nigerians to support the initiative financially once details of the account become publicly available.

According to him, the effort will require collective participation to ensure that soldiers who protect the country receive adequate care and recognition.

Tinubu further stressed that the fund is not a charitable gesture but a duty owed to those who stand on the front lines to safeguard Nigeria’s peace and territorial integrity.

He noted that the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families must be acknowledged through concrete actions and sustained support.

Earlier, the President announced that he would mark his 74th birthday with a modest celebration due to the prevailing national challenges.

He thanked Nigerians for their goodwill messages, prayers, and continued support for his administration.
