Tinubu, Gowon, Obasanjo, Jonathan Set for National Assembly Chapel Dedication

President Bola Tinubu, former Head of State Yakubu Gowon, and ex-Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan are expected to attend the commissioning and dedication of a 750-capacity Christian chapel at the National Assembly complex in Abuja on Sunday, March 1, 2026.

The event, organised by the Christian Legislators Fellowship of the National Assembly, marks a significant milestone in promoting religious inclusion and structured Christian worship within Nigeria’s federal legislature.

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is also billed to grace the ceremony alongside senior clerics, lawmakers and policymakers.

According to a joint statement signed by Fellowship President Senator Binus Yaroe and Secretary Bamidele Salam, the new non-denominational chapel represents a renewed commitment to strengthening spiritual fellowship among Christian lawmakers and legislative staff.

The facility will serve members of both chambers, aides and workers within the National Assembly.

Among top Christian leaders expected at the chapel dedication are Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria; Francis Wale Oke, President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria; and Matthew Hassan Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese.

The chapel project was initiated in May 2019 during the tenure of former Speaker Yakubu Dogara, following years of appeals by Christian legislators seeking a permanent worship centre within the legislative complex.

While a mosque has long existed on the premises for Muslim members and staff, Christian activities were previously held in temporary venues.

Advocates say the National Assembly chapel will promote parity, unity and moral reflection, while providing a dedicated space for worship, counselling and intercessory sessions without disrupting legislative duties.

The dedication ceremony is expected to attract wide participation from Nigeria’s legislative community and the broader Christian public, reinforcing faith-based engagement within the nation’s parliament.
