Tinubu Mourns Death of Naval Operations Chief Rear Admiral Musa Katagum

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the death of the Chief of Naval Operations of the Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral Musa Katagum, who passed away on Thursday after a prolonged illness.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late naval officer, as well as officers and men of the Nigerian Navy and the leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

President Tinubu described Rear Admiral Katagum’s passing as a significant blow to the military and the nation, noting that the senior officer’s vast experience and invaluable contributions to maritime security and defence operations would be greatly missed. He emphasised that Katagum served Nigeria with honour, courage, and exceptional professionalism throughout his distinguished career.

The late naval chief held several strategic and high-profile positions within the Nigerian Navy. He served as Director of Presidential Communication at the Command and Control Centre (PC4) and later as Chief of Intelligence of the Nigerian Navy, roles that placed him at the heart of national security coordination and intelligence operations.

In November 2025, Katagum was appointed Chief of Naval Operations, a position in which he played a critical role in strengthening naval strategy, operational readiness, and the fight against maritime crimes in Nigeria’s territorial waters.

President Tinubu commended the late rear admiral for his valour, visionary leadership, and commitment to mentoring younger officers, describing him as a disciplined and patriotic officer devoted to national service.

Rear Admiral Katagum died in Egypt, where he had been receiving medical treatment. He was subsequently buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

The President prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and urged God to grant comfort and strength to his family, colleagues, and the entire Armed Forces during this period of mourning.
