National News – President Bola Tinubu has mourned Nigerian soldiers killed in a terrorist attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, on Thursday.

The President described the fallen troops as “unforgettable heroes” who paid the ultimate price while defending the nation.

The attack, confirmed by the Defence Headquarters, targeted the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI, resulting in multiple casualties, including a senior officer.

According to official reports, the assault occurred in the early hours of April 9, 2026, when insurgents launched a coordinated strike on the military camp.

Who was affected includes Brigadier-General O.O. Braimah and several soldiers.

What happened was a deadly confrontation between troops and terrorists, where the soldiers fought to repel the attackers.

Where it happened is Benisheikh, a strategic location in Borno State, a region plagued by insurgency.

When it happened was early Thursday morning, and why it occurred is linked to ongoing military offensives against Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters, which have intensified pressure on insurgents.

How the incident unfolded shows that troops resisted the attackers despite heavy firepower, preventing a complete takeover of the base.

President Tinubu stated that the counterattack by insurgents reflects desperation due to sustained military operations that have neutralised several fighters and commanders.

The President extended condolences to the families of the deceased and the Nigerian Armed Forces, urging troops not to lose morale.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to providing better equipment, intelligence, and welfare support for military personnel engaged in counterinsurgency operations.

Tinubu also called on Nigerians and the media to support the armed forces and avoid glorifying attacks on troops.

He assured the government and people of Borno State of continued collaboration to defeat terrorism and restore lasting peace.

The incident highlights the persistent security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East, where insurgency has lasted over a decade, despite ongoing military efforts to end it.
