Trump Calls on Hamas to Proceed with Full Disarmament, $5B Pledged for Gaza Reconstruction

US President Donald Trump on Sunday called on Hamas to commit to “full and immediate” disarmament under his postwar Gaza reconstruction plan. Speaking on his Truth Social platform ahead of a Board of Peace meeting in Washington on February 19, Trump emphasized the importance of demilitarization for long-term stability in the region.

“Very importantly, Hamas must uphold its commitment to Full and Immediate Demilitarisation,” Trump said, highlighting the next phase of the US-brokered ceasefire agreement signed in October 2023 after Hamas’s attack on Israel.

The ceasefire plan, endorsed by the United Nations in November, outlines a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza while Hamas disarms, supported by an international stabilization force tasked with maintaining security.

While Hamas has previously labeled disarmament a “red line,” officials have suggested a possible transfer of weapons to a future Palestinian governing authority. Both sides continue to report daily ceasefire violations, underscoring the delicate nature of the truce.

Trump also highlighted that the Board of Peace, originally intended to manage Gaza reconstruction, could have a broader international role. “The Board of Peace has unlimited potential,” he said.

The Board of Peace first met on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos last month and will hold its next session in Washington this Thursday. Member countries have pledged $5 billion toward Gaza reconstruction, along with thousands of personnel for the International Stabilisation Force and local policing initiatives to ensure security for residents.

The organization, Trump noted, will operate “in conjunction with the United Nations,” and he described it as “the most consequential international body in history.”

In addition to the Board of Peace, the ceasefire plan establishes a Palestinian technocratic committee aimed at assuming governance responsibilities in Gaza, signaling a structured approach to long-term peace and reconstruction.
