Veterans Call on Nigerians to Uphold Murtala Muhammed’s Legacy of Discipline and Patriotism

Veterans of the Nigerian Army have urged Nigerians to uphold the enduring values of discipline, integrity, selflessness, and unwavering patriotism exemplified by former Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed.

The call was made by members of the Pronto Veterans Association, a body of retired officers who served in the Nigerian Army Signals alongside the late military leader. The appeal was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the association’s chairman, Col. Saka Oyelese (retd.), to mark the 50th anniversary of General Muhammed’s assassination.

General Muhammed ruled Nigeria from July 29, 1975, until February 13, 1976, when he was assassinated in Lagos. He was killed while on his way to work after his convoy was ambushed near the Federal Secretariat, Ikoyi, by soldiers loyal to the then Head of the Nigerian Army Physical Training Corps, Lt. Col. Buka Dimka.

In the statement, the veterans described General Muhammed as one of Nigeria’s most decisive and patriotic leaders, noting that his leadership style was driven by a deep commitment to national unity, good governance, and progress.

“We join fellow Nigerians in solemn remembrance of General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, former Head of State and one of the most decisive leaders in our national history, as we mark the 50th anniversary of his untimely death,” the statement said.

“Five decades on, his life and service remain a powerful reminder that leadership is a sacred trust rooted in sacrifice, courage, accountability, and service to the people.

“May the enduring legacy of General Murtala Ramat Muhammed continue to inspire present and future generations in the pursuit of a stronger, just, and united Nigeria.”

The association further highlighted that although General Muhammed was in office for only about six months, his administration left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s political and administrative landscape.

According to the veterans, his government introduced far-reaching reforms aimed at restoring discipline in public life, strengthening accountability, and rebuilding public confidence in governance.

“In an exceptionally short period, his administration implemented bold public service reforms, restructured the Armed Forces, pursued an independent and principled foreign policy, and laid a clear foundation for the return to civilian rule,” the statement noted.

“These decisive actions, taken within just six months, left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s history and continue to define General Murtala Muhammed’s legacy as a symbol of purposeful leadership and national renewal.”
