National News – The Lagos State Government has commended residents of Alimosho Local Government Area for their strong participation in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, describing the council as one of the most compliant areas in the state.
The commendation came on Saturday during an inspection tour led by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, alongside First Lady Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and other government officials.
The inspection covered several communities, including Oguntade, Shasha, Akerele, and Orisunbare, where residents were observed cleaning their surroundings and disposing of waste at designated collection points.
The exercise forms part of the state’s renewed environmental sanitation programme aimed at improving public health and maintaining cleaner communities across Lagos.
Residents who spoke during the exercise praised the initiative but raised concerns over irregular waste evacuation by Private Sector Participation operators.
According to them, waste often remains unattended for days after sanitation activities, creating environmental challenges despite residents’ efforts to keep their surroundings clean.
Responding to the complaints, Wahab acknowledged the waste collection issues affecting parts of Alimosho and disclosed that the government had engaged additional contractors to improve service delivery.
He also directed relevant officials to meet with waste operators responsible for the affected areas to ensure prompt evacuation.
The commissioner said the level of cleanliness recorded during the exercise demonstrated that many residents understood the importance of environmental hygiene.
He praised the leadership of Alimosho Local Government for sustaining public awareness campaigns and encouraged continuous engagement with residents.
Addressing concerns about flash flooding in Akowonjo and neighbouring communities, Wahab stressed that proper waste disposal and regular drainage maintenance remain essential for flood prevention.
He added that government officials would reassess vulnerable drainage channels to determine whether additional interventions were necessary.
Alimosho Local Government Chairman, Johnson Akinpelu, assured residents that the council would continue supporting sanitation efforts through increased awareness campaigns and improved waste management services.
He also urged residents to pay waste collection fees promptly to help operators maintain efficient service delivery.
The sanitation exercise marks the second edition since Lagos State reintroduced the monthly environmental sanitation programme.
