National News – Troops of the Nigerian Army have foiled a planned kidnapping operation in Kogi State, killing one suspected terrorist and recovering weapons during a successful security operation in Lokoja Local Government Area.
The operation was carried out on May 30, 2026, by soldiers of the 12 Brigade under the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army.
According to military authorities, the troops acted on credible intelligence that armed criminals were planning to abduct residents in Jakura II Community along the Old Obajana–Tajimi Road.
Security sources said the soldiers quickly deployed to a suspected crossing point used by the criminal group and laid an ambush to prevent the planned attack.
During the operation, the troops encountered the terrorists and engaged them in a gun battle.
As a result of the firefight, one suspected terrorist was killed while several others escaped with gunshot wounds.
The army said the fleeing suspects are being tracked through ongoing clearance and search operations in the area.
The military also recovered one AK-47 rifle, five magazines, 70 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, a bandolier, and mobile phones believed to belong to members of the criminal network.
Officials said the recovered items further confirmed the group’s involvement in kidnapping and other criminal activities.
The Commander of the 12 Brigade, Brigadier General Kasim Umar Sidi, praised the troops for their vigilance, professionalism, and combat effectiveness.
He reaffirmed the army’s commitment to sustaining pressure on terrorists, kidnappers, and other criminal elements threatening public safety across Kogi State.
Residents were also urged to support security agencies by providing timely and actionable intelligence that could help prevent future attacks and improve community security.
The Nigerian Army said it remains determined to maintain offensive operations aimed at protecting lives, securing communities, and eliminating criminal networks operating within the region.
