Shettima Visits Kwara Community After Deadly Extremist Attack Kills 75 Residents

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday visited Woro village in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State following a deadly extremist attack that killed at least 75 residents, in one of the deadliest incidents in the state in recent years.

Shettima’s visit was carried out on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to a statement by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha.

“The President has directed that the Vice President assess the situation firsthand and convey federal condolences to the grieving families,” Nkwocha said.

The Vice President was received on arrival by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, alongside senior government and security officials.

Governor AbdulRazaq earlier described the victims as local Muslims who were “massacred for refusing to submit to extremists preaching a strange doctrine.” Initial reports had placed the death toll at over 100, though authorities later confirmed at least 75 fatalities.

Security sources said the attack occurred late Tuesday night after militants allegedly attempted—and failed—to forcibly indoctrinate members of the community.

Nkwocha further disclosed that Shettima conveyed President Tinubu’s firm assurance that the Federal Government would pursue justice relentlessly.

“VP Shettima is conveying President Tinubu’s strong assurances that the Federal Government will not relent until those responsible are tracked, apprehended, and brought to justice,” he said.

Earlier, President Tinubu had condemned the attacks on Woro and neighbouring Nuku communities, describing the perpetrators’ actions as “cowardly and beastly.”

The President confirmed the deployment of an Army battalion under Operation Savannah Shield, tasked with neutralising the attackers and protecting vulnerable communities.

He also called for closer collaboration between federal and state authorities to deliver humanitarian relief to affected families and ensure those responsible for the violence face the full weight of the law.
