National News – The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists and recovered two locally made pistols, live ammunition and suspected illicit drugs following a cult-related attack that left one person dead in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.
The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday by its Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m., when 200-level Management Science student of Niger Delta University, Ebube Jonathan, who was alleged to be a member of the Black Axe confraternity, was attacked by unidentified assailants along Kabaka Street in Amassoma.
Police said the victim was reportedly macheted and shot before he was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
The statement said operatives of the Amassoma Police Division launched a swift follow-up operation and, at about 4:00 p.m. the same day, arrested two suspects identified as Godswin Adobu, 24, a 300-level Fine and Applied Arts student in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Niger Delta University, and Tarilaefa Fesingha, 21.
According to the police, the suspects were arrested at Ending Pele in Amassoma while allegedly mobilising to avenge the killing of their gang member.
During the operation, police recovered two locally made pistols, two live 9mm rounds of ammunition and suspected illicit drugs.
The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling cultism and other violent crimes across Bayelsa State, warning criminal elements to abandon unlawful activities or face the full weight of the law.
He also appealed to residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminality.
Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
