Kwara Residents Flee to Niger After Deadly Terrorist Attack Leaves Woro Community Deserted

Residents of Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have fled en masse to neighbouring Niger State following a deadly terrorist attack that reportedly claimed over 176 lives.

The attack, which began on Tuesday evening and continued into Wednesday morning, triggered widespread panic, forcing families to abandon their homes and farmlands with little or no belongings as fear spread across Woro and surrounding villages.

A viral video circulating on social media on Saturday shows displaced residents taking refuge in Wawa town, Niger State, where they were seen gathered by the roadside after fleeing Kwara. Several vehicles believed to have transported the victims from the attack-hit area were parked nearby.

In the footage, women and children were seen sitting on plastic chairs under a makeshift tent, while others sat on bare ground, visibly exhausted after the traumatic escape.

Confirming the situation, the Special Assistant to the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, ZulQharnain Musa, said the entire Woro community had been deserted following the terrorist invasion.

“The whole community has been deserted as of Saturday. Residents have absconded to neighbouring communities, including Niger State, Kaiama town, and some who escaped through the forest ended up in Baruten,” Musa said.

He disclosed that security forces have been deployed to the area to restore calm, adding that an Army battalion is currently stationed in Woro following directives from President Bola Tinubu.

Despite the increased military presence, many residents remain reluctant to return home due to fear of renewed attacks and lingering concerns about their safety, as entire households continue to seek refuge in host communities.
