Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep sorrow over the recent wave of violent attacks across Nigeria, urging authorities to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and restore security in affected communities.
The pontiff, born Robert Prevost, made the remarks in a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, offering prayers for victims of terrorism and communal violence following deadly attacks in Kwara, Katsina and Benue states.
“It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria, leading to a heavy loss of life,” the Pope wrote.
“I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism. I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen.”
The Pope’s message comes amid renewed security concerns across Nigeria, where fresh attacks have left dozens dead, homes destroyed and residents displaced in multiple states.
Kwara Attack: Gunmen Invade Woro Village
In Kwara State, gunmen reportedly launched a deadly attack on Woro village shortly after military operations were conducted in the area against what authorities described as terrorist elements.
According to reports, the attackers set shops ablaze and torched the residence of a traditional ruler, triggering widespread panic.
Several residents were injured and forced to flee into nearby bushes as the assailants overran parts of the community.
Katsina: Over 20 Killed in Faskari Attack
On the same day, suspected bandits carried out a deadly raid on Doma community in Tafoki Ward, Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing more than 20 people.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the village in large numbers, opened fire indiscriminately and inflicted mass casualties before fleeing the area.
Benue: Security Forces Repel Anwase Attack
Meanwhile, in Benue State, security operatives repelled an attack by suspected bandits in Anwase village, Kwande Local Government Area. Although no casualties were officially recorded, several houses were set ablaze during the invasion.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said security forces responded swiftly.
“It is true there was an attack on Anwase, but our gallant officers repelled them and there was no casualty,” Edet told PUNCH Online.
However, residents said the attackers invaded the community around noon on Friday and destroyed multiple homes before retreating.
