National News – Students of Baptist Secondary Grammar School in Ago-Aare, Oyo State, have appealed to the Federal Government to urgently install speed breakers and other traffic-calming measures along the busy Ago-Aare–Saki highway to prevent accidents and protect lives.
The students raised the concern in a video circulating on social media, where representatives of the school community called attention to the dangers posed by speeding vehicles and heavy-duty trucks passing the road daily.
Speaking on behalf of the students, staff, and management of the school, a student identified as Ayantoye Emmanuel acknowledged the Federal Government for ongoing road rehabilitation work along the Ago-Aare–Saki corridor.
However, he stressed that safety measures must accompany improved road conditions.
According to him, the school gate is located directly along the highway, forcing students and staff to cross the road frequently while vehicles move at high speeds.
Emmanuel explained that although the road repair project is expected to improve transportation and economic activities in the region, it has also increased traffic speed, which poses serious safety threats to those entering and leaving the school premises.
The students therefore urged authorities to prioritise the installation of speed breakers, pedestrian crossings, and official school warning signs near the entrance of the school.
They noted that such traffic control measures would significantly reduce the risk of accidents involving students, teachers, and other road users.
The Ago-Aare–Saki road is a key inter-town route linking several communities in Oyo State and neighbouring regions.
The corridor is heavily used by commercial transport operators and agricultural haulage trucks transporting goods between towns.
Residents and commuters have for years complained about the poor state of the road before recent federal maintenance work began.
However, road safety experts warn that newly rehabilitated highways often lead to higher vehicle speeds if proper safety infrastructure is not installed, especially in areas where schools, markets, and residential communities are located close to major roads.
The students expressed confidence that the Federal Government and the Federal Road Maintenance Agency would respond quickly to their appeal to ensure a safer environment for learning and daily movement around the school.
