National News – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed plans for deeper security collaboration between Nigeria and the United Kingdom as part of his ongoing state visit to the European nation.

The Nigerian leader said discussions with Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the UK, would focus on tackling terrorism, improving regional stability in West Africa, and strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

Tinubu made the remarks during a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, where he addressed distinguished guests including Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Catherine, Princess of Wales.

The event formed part of the president’s two-day official visit aimed at expanding diplomatic, security, and economic cooperation.

According to the president, terrorism threats across the Sahel region continue to pose serious risks to peace and stability in West Africa.

He noted that Nigeria carries a significant responsibility in counter-terrorism efforts and emphasised that collaboration with the United Kingdom remains vital in addressing these challenges.

Tinubu also used the opportunity to reflect on his personal history with Britain.

He recalled that the country offered him refuge during the military dictatorship of Sani Abacha in the 1990s, when he was among pro-democracy activists forced into exile.

During that period, he said his residence was placed under surveillance by the Metropolitan Police Service to protect him from threats linked to the Nigerian military junta.

Highlighting historical ties between both nations, Tinubu pointed out that Nigeria’s legal and parliamentary institutions were partly shaped by British traditions, particularly English common law.

These shared foundations, he said, continue to influence governance and democratic development in Nigeria.

The president further acknowledged the contributions of Nigerians living in Britain, especially healthcare professionals working within the National Health Service.

Nigerian doctors and nurses, he noted, form one of the largest groups of international medical workers supporting the UK’s healthcare system.

Tinubu also referenced sports stars of Nigerian heritage such as Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Anthony Joshua, and Maro Itoje, describing them as symbols of the strong cultural and human connections between the two nations.

The visit is expected to produce several agreements covering trade, investment, defence cooperation, and infrastructure development, including financing for the refurbishment of major ports in Lagos.
