National News – Siminalayi Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State, has announced that the 33.5-kilometre Elele–Umudioga–Egbeda–Ubimini–Ikiri–Omoku road project is nearing completion and will be inaugurated in May.

According to the governor, the major dual carriageway is already about 90 percent completed, bringing relief to residents and commuters who have long struggled with poor road conditions and security challenges along the corridor.

During an inspection tour of the road on Wednesday, Fubara said the remaining construction work would be completed before the end of April.

The road cuts across key local government areas including Ikwerre Local Government Area, Emohua Local Government Area, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, providing a critical transport link within the state.

The governor described the project as one of the signature infrastructure achievements of his administration.

He explained that expanding the road network is vital to boosting trade, improving mobility, and unlocking economic opportunities in communities connected by the route.

Fubara also highlighted the importance of the road to the development of Omoku, widely known as the “Gas City” of Rivers State because of its strong energy and industrial activities.

According to him, better road connectivity will encourage business growth, improve logistics, and support economic expansion across the region.

Security concerns were also a major reason for prioritising the project.

The governor recalled that the corridor had previously been notorious for kidnappings and criminal attacks, making it risky for travellers and businesses operating in the area.

He noted that the upgraded road will improve accessibility for security agencies and emergency responders, making it easier to monitor and patrol the area.

With better infrastructure and faster response capabilities, authorities expect a significant reduction in crime along the route.

Fubara commended the contractor for maintaining a steady pace of work and delivering quality construction, particularly on the bridge section crossing a nearby river.

He expressed confidence that the final stage of the project would be completed within schedule ahead of the official commissioning in May.

Once inaugurated, the road is expected to ease transportation, improve security, and stimulate economic activities in several communities across Rivers State.
