National News – The National Youth Service Corps has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a female corps member in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as authorities launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officials confirmed that a staff member of the scheme is currently under probe while security agencies work to establish the facts behind the tragic event.
The deceased corps member, identified as Victoria Ariyo, was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State before her sudden death.
In an official statement released on Saturday, the NYSC described the incident as deeply distressing and extended condolences to the family and friends of the late corps member.
According to the statement signed by the scheme’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the organisation is cooperating fully with security agencies investigating the case.
The NYSC also confirmed that an individual connected to the matter has been taken into custody while the investigation continues.
The Ogun State Police Command has also opened a probe into the incident.
Police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed that the State Criminal Investigation Department is currently handling the case and gathering evidence to determine the exact cause of Ariyo’s death.
Sources familiar with the development alleged that the corps member may have died from complications linked to an abortion procedure.
Reports further suggested that a relationship between the deceased and an NYSC official is part of the ongoing investigation, although authorities have yet to officially confirm these claims.
Reiterating its commitment to discipline and professionalism, the NYSC emphasised that it maintains a strict code of conduct for both staff members and corps participants.
The organisation noted that any form of misconduct or abuse of office will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The agency also appealed to the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues, stressing that due process must be allowed to run its course.
Officials assured that the safety, welfare, and dignity of corps members remain a top priority.
The incident has raised concern among corps members in Abeokuta, especially following the recent death of another corps member, Adeleye Mary, whose cause of death remains unknown.
Authorities say investigations into both incidents are ongoing as residents and colleagues await answers.
