National News – Afenifere Diaspora USA has criticised Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the worsening security situation across the country, warning that continued violence could escalate into sectarian conflict if urgent action is not taken.
The group expressed concern that the Federal Government has not done enough to address attacks and protect citizens from growing threats.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Sikiru Fadairo, and Secretary, David Adenekan, the organisation said the rising wave of killings and community displacement reflects a serious failure by the government to fulfil its constitutional duty of safeguarding lives and property.
The group highlighted a surge in violent attacks carried out by extremist and armed groups across different regions of the country.
According to the statement, terrorist organisations such as Islamic State West Africa Province, Ansaru and Lakurawa have intensified assaults, particularly in the North-East.
Afenifere Diaspora USA cited recent coordinated attacks in Borno State where several military formations were reportedly overrun.
The attacks allegedly led to the deaths of numerous security personnel, while many civilians were abducted during the violence.
The organisation questioned whether the scale of killings and displacement could amount to ethnic cleansing or genocide if the situation remains unchecked.
It also criticised the Federal Government’s reported spending of about $9 million on lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C., aimed at countering international claims that Nigeria is experiencing genocide.
Beyond security concerns, the group raised alarm over ongoing debates surrounding Nigeria’s electoral framework.
It faulted lawmakers over proposals that may weaken democratic standards, including discussions about removing the requirement of a secondary school certificate as a minimum qualification for presidential candidates.
Afenifere insisted that maintaining educational requirements for leadership positions is essential for governance in a modern, knowledge-driven society.
It warned that lowering such standards could negatively impact leadership quality and national development.
The organisation also called for stronger electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among its key recommendations is the mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results to enhance transparency and restore public confidence in the electoral process.
