National News – Veteran sports journalist Toyin Ibitoye has advocated for the renewal of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle’s contract, emphasizing his ability to build a disciplined and competitive team.

Despite Nigeria not winning the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Chelle’s leadership earned admiration for the team’s organisation, style, and professionalism.

Ibitoye noted that luck sometimes determines tournament outcomes, but Chelle has laid a strong foundation for future success.

Ibitoye, who served as the Super Eagles’ media officer from 2015 to 2020, highlighted the disruptive effect of frequent coaching changes, which he believes affected Nigeria’s World Cup qualification.

“We had three different coaches during the World Cup qualifiers, and the results suffered. Chelle’s continuity could have secured qualification earlier,” he said.

Looking ahead to the next AFCON tournaments in 2026 and 2028, Ibitoye stressed that Chelle’s approach, combined with proper preparation and a bit of luck, could bring Nigeria one or even two championships.

Chelle has reportedly requested an increase in his monthly salary from $50,000 to $130,000 to enhance working conditions and support his technical team.

However, he denied leaving the national team, reaffirming his commitment to guiding Nigeria in upcoming international friendlies against Iran and Jordan.

Analysts argue that retaining Chelle will strengthen team cohesion, build on existing strategies, and improve Nigeria’s chances in major tournaments.

Football fans across Nigeria continue to praise the Super Eagles’ performance under Chelle, noting the team’s discipline, tactical awareness, and cohesive play.

The call for contract renewal reflects growing confidence in his vision and management skills, which may secure Nigeria’s prominence in African football in the coming years.
