National News – The National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, on Tuesday regained control of the union’s national secretariat in Abuja after a rival faction briefly occupied the facility.
The development followed a dispute between two factions over leadership of the union, with both sides claiming legal backing for their actions.
Akinsanya visited the secretariat shortly after the building was reclaimed to assess the extent of damage to property caused during the takeover.
A video circulating online showed him inspecting offices and facilities within the premises while speaking with supporters and officials.
The confrontation began on Monday when a faction led by Tajudeen Baruwa moved into the NURTW national secretariat in Abuja, claiming that court judgments had authorised them to assume control of the office.
Baruwa insisted that the move was a lawful execution of court orders and said his group had waited for about two years for the judgments to be obeyed before acting.
According to Baruwa, the faction formally informed the police and submitted copies of the court rulings before occupying the secretariat.
He maintained that the takeover was peaceful and not intended to cause unrest, although he alleged that one of his members was attacked during the process and later hospitalised.
However, Akinsanya rejected the claim that Baruwa’s faction had the legal authority to take over the office.
In a statement, he described the incident as a forceful occupation and said the judgment cited by Baruwa did not involve him as a defendant.
He further explained that the ruling had already been appealed and that a stay of execution was in place, meaning the court order could not legally be enforced while the appeal process continues.
Akinsanya reassured members of the union and the public that the situation was under the control of security agencies.
He also urged NURTW members across the country to remain calm, law-abiding, and peaceful as the legal dispute over the union’s leadership continues in court.
The leadership crisis within the transport union has sparked tensions among members, highlighting ongoing internal disagreements over control of the influential organisation.
