National News – The Abia State Government on Thursday held a state burial service for renowned evangelist Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, who died at the age of 80, honouring his decades of spiritual leadership and global evangelism.
The ceremony took place at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, where dignitaries, political leaders, clerics and traditional rulers gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of the Abia-born preacher.
Governor Alex Otti, who led the tribute during the burial ceremony, said the state organised the event to recognise Ukpai’s significant contributions to Abia State, Nigeria and the global Christian community.
According to the governor, the late cleric lived a life worthy of honour and remembrance, challenging Nigerians to reflect on how they would be remembered after death.
Otti urged citizens to live meaningful and impactful lives, noting that Ukpai’s legacy as a preacher and mentor had inspired generations.
He also expressed sympathy to the cleric’s family, encouraging them to remain hopeful despite their loss, while affirming faith in the Christian promise of resurrection.
The burial ceremony drew prominent figures from across the country, including Bayelsa State Governor Doye Diri and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Others in attendance included members of the National Assembly, state lawmakers, deputy governors, members of Abia’s State Executive Council, and religious leaders from various Christian organisations.
Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, represented by Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, described Ukpai as a visionary leader who dedicated his life to spreading the gospel.
He said the evangelist fought a good fight of faith and left behind a legacy that Nigerians should emulate.
In a tribute, Rev. Mosy Madugba, National Secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, described Ukpai as a unifying voice among gospel ministers worldwide.
He revealed that the fellowship honoured the cleric by placing its flag on his coffin as a mark of respect.
Delivering the sermon, PFN President Bishop Francis Wale Oke emphasised the importance of righteous living, stating that the late evangelist exemplified holiness and dedication to Christian service.
The late Ukpai’s first son, Chidi Uma, thanked Governor Otti and other dignitaries for supporting the family during the burial rites.
