NDDC Supports NYSC, Aids Rivers Flood Victims

National News – The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has strengthened youth development and provided humanitarian support by donating broadcast equipment to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and distributing relief materials to flood victims in Ogu-Bollo community, Rivers State.

The intervention, announced on March 27, 2026, highlights efforts to improve youth engagement, enhance communication infrastructure, and assist communities affected by natural disasters in the Niger Delta.

At a presentation ceremony held at the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja, NDDC Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku said the donation aims to improve communication capacity within the NYSC scheme.

Represented by the Director of the NDDC Liaison Office in Abuja, Mrs. Mary Nwaeke, he explained that effective communication is vital for national integration and youth development.

According to Ogbuku, the NYSC plays a key role in uniting Nigerian youths from diverse regions, making the strengthening of its communication platforms essential.

The commission therefore stepped in to support the NYSC radio station, ensuring it can better engage corps members and inform the public about its programmes and achievements.

The equipment package donated by the NDDC includes a complete inverter system with lithium battery, a 2-kilowatt Italian-made energy-efficient radio transmitter that complies with National Broadcasting Commission regulations, and a complete upgrade of the station’s wiring system.

The renovation covers both recording and live studios, eliminating audio noise and significantly improving sound quality for broadcasts.

NYSC Director-General Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, represented by Mr. Emeka Mgbemena, Director of Media, commended the commission for the timely intervention.

He said the equipment will improve operational efficiency and enhance practical training opportunities for corps members interested in broadcasting.

Mgbemena noted that the NYSC radio station has been operational for over four years and has already trained several corps members, with at least 12 participants securing jobs in media organisations over the past three years.

In a separate intervention, the NDDC also distributed food items and household materials to residents of Ogu-Bollo Kingdom in Rivers State, whose homes and farmlands were damaged by recent floods.

Representing the NDDC Managing Director during the relief distribution, Jeremiah Onolejoloni, Director II of Education, Health and Social Services, said the support was designed to ease the hardship faced by affected families.

The relief materials were supplied through the Derek and Davia Foundation, an NGO supported financially by the commission.

The paramount ruler of Ogu-Bollo, Chief Joachim Amachiri, thanked the NDDC for the assistance, saying it would help the community recover from the devastating flood and support families rebuilding their livelihoods.
