National News – The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday approved a six-month extension of the tenure of its caretaker committees in Ekiti State and Osun State, a move aimed at maintaining stability in the party ahead of future political activities.

The decision was taken during the party’s 8th National Convention, where delegates unanimously endorsed the proposal to prolong the committees’ tenure beyond their scheduled expiration at the end of March 2026.

The motion for the tenure extension was moved by Senator Barau Jibrin, representing Kano North, who explained that the current caretaker committees at the ward, local government and state levels were due to end their mandates this month.

According to him, holding fresh party congresses at this period would not be practical due to upcoming political developments.

Jibrin said extending the tenure would allow the party to ensure proper coordination and smooth preparations for future congresses across the two states.

The motion was seconded by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, and received overwhelming approval from delegates at the convention.

During the gathering, the party also approved the dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC) to pave the way for the election of new national officers.

The motion was moved by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Abdulkarim Kana, who cited provisions of the party’s constitution, and was seconded by Deputy National Secretary Prof. Abdulkarim Oluopolekana.

In another development, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, moved a motion adopting consensus as the primary mode of election for selecting new national officers of the ruling party.

The motion was seconded by Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, who also serves as Vice-Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum.

Similarly, Senate President Godswill Akpabio moved a motion for the formal adoption and ratification of ward, local government, state and zonal congresses already conducted nationwide.

The motion, seconded by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum, affirmed that the processes complied with the Electoral Act and the APC’s internal guidelines.

Delegates at the convention unanimously adopted all motions, reinforcing the party’s internal structure and preparations ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
