National News – Political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections may intensify as former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is expected to formally defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday in Kano.

Sources within both political camps disclosed that the influential northern politician will be received by the ADC’s national leadership during a public declaration expected to attract large crowds of supporters from Kano and across the North.

Party insiders revealed that the ADC National Chairman, David Mark, and the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, are expected to officially welcome Kwankwaso into the party structure during the event.

The move is reportedly part of broader coalition-building efforts among opposition figures seeking to strengthen alliances ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Sources within the ADC said the party had been engaging Kwankwaso for more than three months.

Negotiations initially stalled when the former governor reportedly insisted on assurances of the party’s vice-presidential slot as part of a proposed joint ticket arrangement for the next election cycle.

However, recent meetings between Kwankwaso and senior ADC leaders in Abuja appear to have resolved the differences, leading to his agreement to join the party without preconditions.

The expected defection comes amid shifting political dynamics in Kano State, especially after Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, widely regarded as Kwankwaso’s political ally, defected earlier to the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with members of the state assembly and cabinet.

Reports also indicate that Kwankwaso may join the ADC alongside the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, who recently resigned from office.

Political observers believe the move could significantly reshape opposition alliances as several political heavyweights continue discussions on forming a stronger coalition platform.

Meanwhile, the APC has dismissed concerns about the potential political impact of Kwankwaso’s move.

The party’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, stated that the former governor’s defection would not threaten President Bola Tinubu’s chances of re-election in 2027, arguing that Kwankwaso lacks the nationwide political structure required to challenge the ruling party.

Despite the APC’s stance, analysts say Monday’s declaration in Kano could signal the start of broader opposition cooperation aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape before the next general election.
