National News – The Federal Government has proposed temporarily recruiting retired teachers and skilled volunteers to tackle staffing shortages in Nigeria’s education sector.
This initiative, outlined in the recently released National Teacher Policy by the Federal Ministry of Education, seeks to improve teacher retention, enhance instructional quality, and address critical manpower gaps across schools.
The policy highlights persistent challenges, including teacher attrition, inadequate subject mastery, low motivation, and uneven deployment of qualified educators.
According to the policy, retired teachers and experienced volunteers may be recruited temporarily, especially in crisis areas with severe shortages.
The government also plans to recruit teachers from local communities to encourage retention and reduce frequent staff turnover.
Key issues identified include non-certified personnel filling teaching roles, lack of enforcement of professional standards, poor infrastructure, insufficient teaching materials, and low ICT adoption among educators.
The policy further emphasizes improving motivation by addressing delayed career progression, poor incentives, and societal attitudes toward teaching.
Rural schools, in particular, are facing the harshest shortages due to limited incentives and unequal teacher distribution.
Rapid population growth and inadequate investment in teacher training have intensified the gap between qualified teachers and increasing student numbers, resulting in declining educational standards.
Past interventions, including teacher development programs and curriculum reforms, have struggled to retain trained educators, many of whom leave for better opportunities.
The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria recently reported that the shortage of qualified teachers significantly contributed to poor learning outcomes, while the Nigeria Union of Teachers highlighted a deficit of over 194,876 educators in public schools, urging government action on salaries and welfare.
The Federal Ministry of Education maintains that the National Teacher Policy aims to transform and elevate the teaching profession to align with global best practices, ensuring improved learning outcomes nationwide.
By leveraging experienced professionals and promoting local recruitment, the government hopes to address critical staffing challenges and strengthen the education system across Nigeria.
