National News – Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus claimed her second consecutive Miami Open title on Sunday, defeating Coco Gauff of the United States 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in a thrilling final at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami.

With this win, Sabalenka completed a rare “Sunshine Double,” having also captured the Indian Wells crown earlier this month, cementing her dominance in early-season WTA 1000 events.

The world number one, 24, joins an elite group of women including Iga Swiatek, Steffi Graf, Kim Clijsters, and Victoria Azarenka to win both prestigious hardcourt titles in the same year.

Sabalenka reflected on her achievement, stating, “My goal has always been to put my name in history, and I just did it.”

Her victory also avenged her sole loss this season, the Australian Open final defeat to Elena Rybakina, whom she overcame in both Indian Wells and the Miami semi-finals.

Gauff, 22, a rising American star, reached her first Miami Open final, despite struggling with a nerve issue in her left arm earlier at Indian Wells.

The final was intense: Sabalenka dominated the first set with precise power, but Gauff rallied in the second, breaking her opponent’s serve for the first time to claim the set 6-4.

The decisive third set saw Sabalenka regain control, breaking early and maintaining her focus to clinch the match.

“This month has been incredible,” Sabalenka said, noting not only her two titles but also personal milestones including getting engaged to Georgios Frangulis and welcoming a new puppy.

Meanwhile, Gauff expressed optimism for her future, highlighting the experience gained and progress made despite setbacks during the month.

The Miami Open final showcased both players’ resilience, strategy, and athleticism, highlighting Sabalenka’s consistency and Gauff’s emerging potential on the world stage.

Fans witnessed a match filled with tension, energy, and historic achievements that will be remembered in WTA history.
