National News – A judge in the United States has granted professional golfer Tiger Woods permission to leave the country for specialised medical treatment following his recent arrest linked to a car crash in the state of Florida.

The ruling allows the 50-year-old sports icon to enter a private inpatient rehabilitation programme abroad aimed at addressing his complex medical and recovery needs.

The decision was issued on Wednesday by Judge Darren Steele of the Martin County Court after Woods’ legal team filed a motion requesting travel approval.

His attorney, Douglas Duncan, told the court that Woods urgently requires an “intensive and medically integrated treatment programme” that cannot be effectively carried out within the United States due to intense media attention and privacy concerns.

According to court filings, Woods was arrested following a road accident in Florida and later charged with misdemeanour counts of driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.

A breathalyser test reportedly showed no alcohol in his system, but authorities said he declined a urine test after the incident.

Police reports from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office indicated that officers observed Woods appearing lethargic, with bloodshot and glassy eyes.

Investigators also reportedly found two hydrocodone pills, a prescription opioid painkiller, during the incident.

Woods allegedly told officers he had been looking at his phone while adjusting the car radio and did not notice a vehicle slowing down ahead of him before the crash.

The golfer has faced multiple health challenges over the years, including several back operations and extensive surgeries on his leg following a serious accident in 2021 in California.

Woods also underwent surgery for a ruptured Achilles tendon in March 2025 and another back procedure later that year.

Following the latest incident, Woods announced he would temporarily step away from golf to focus on recovery and rehabilitation.

The development also means he will no longer serve as captain of the United States team for the 2027 Ryder Cup, a decision confirmed by the PGA of America.

Golf authorities and officials have publicly supported Woods’ decision, praising him for prioritising his long-term health and recovery.
