Ebonyi First Lady Clears N3.2m Hospital Bills

National News – The wife of Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has paid hospital bills totaling N3.2 million for 16 indigent patients at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

The humanitarian gesture took place on Friday, April 4, 2026, during her Easter visit to the hospital’s male and female surgical wards, where she met patients who had been unable to leave due to unpaid medical expenses.

Mrs. Nwifuru settled the outstanding medical bills to enable the patients regain their freedom and continue recovery without financial pressure.

According to reports, the intervention was aimed at supporting vulnerable residents struggling with healthcare costs in Ebonyi State.

Speaking during the visit, the governor’s wife encouraged the beneficiaries not to lose hope despite their challenges.

She urged them to remain prayerful and optimistic, noting that difficult circumstances could change with faith and perseverance.

The outreach forms part of her broader humanitarian initiatives focused on assisting disadvantaged groups and easing economic hardship.

Hospital officials welcomed the intervention and praised Mrs. Nwifuru for her compassion.

The Head of the Medical Social Work Department at the hospital, Dr. Sorochi Otu, commended the governor’s wife for her continued support to vulnerable patients and the health sector.

Beyond the hospital visit, Mrs. Nwifuru also extended assistance to other institutions across the state as part of the Easter outreach.

She paid visits to the Rehabilitation Programme EFFATA in Ugbodo, Ebonyi Local Government Area, as well as the Trinitarian Foundation for Orphans and Helpless and the Juvenile Remand Home.

During the visits, she distributed relief materials, financial aid, and gift items to beneficiaries, including patients, children, and other vulnerable individuals.

The Director of EFFATA, Mr. Onyibe Nwiboko, and the Reverend Sister in charge of the Trinitarian Foundation, Mary-Agnes Onyejiechi, expressed gratitude for the visit and described the gesture as timely support for those in need.

Also speaking, Mr. Emmanuel Nkwuda, Head of Child Development at the Ebonyi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, praised the governor’s wife for recently reconstructing the juvenile remand home and for her continued dedication to social welfare.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries at the EFFATA facility, Mr. John Nweke thanked Mrs. Nwifuru for the visit and the distribution of relief materials, describing the gesture as a meaningful Easter gift.
