National News – Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is reportedly interested in securing Michael Kayode for Nigeria’s squad ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The 21-year-old Brentford defender, born in Italy to Nigerian parents, is eligible to represent both Italy and Nigeria.

Chelle’s focus on dual-nationality players has intensified, as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) explores options to win Kayode’s international allegiance.

Kayode, a versatile right-back, has represented Italy at U-18, U-19, and U-21 levels but has not yet appeared in a senior competitive match, leaving the door open for a potential switch under FIFA rules.

Sources from SportsBoom indicate that Chelle is keen to meet with Kayode’s representatives to discuss his inclusion.

The coach values the player’s physicality, energy, and long throw-in ability, viewing him as a key reinforcement ahead of AFCON 2027.

Born and trained in Italy, Kayode rose through Juventus’ academy before moving to AC Gozzano, where he made 34 appearances and scored twice, helping the club achieve promotion.

He joined Brentford on loan in January 2025 and secured a permanent deal in May, tying him to the Premier League club until 2030.

Despite his previous interest in representing Italy, the absence of senior call-ups under former Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso has renewed Nigeria’s hopes.

Chelle’s strategy of recruiting dual-nationality talent is already in motion, with moves involving Ryan Alebiosu, Emmanuel Fernandez, and Arthur Okonkwo reportedly advancing.

The Super Eagles aim to strengthen their squad depth and tactical options ahead of the continent’s premier football tournament.

Kayode’s potential switch could provide a timely boost to Nigeria’s defensive line, combining international experience with Premier League exposure.
