National News – Ayoade Adeseun, former lawmaker for Oyo Central Senatorial District and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has officially resigned his title as Mayegun of Ogbomosoland.
The announcement came on Sunday during a press conference at the Onipanu community in Ogbomoso, Surulere Local Government Area.
Adeseun cited the high-handedness of the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, as the main reason for stepping down.
Adeseun’s resignation follows an indefinite suspension issued by Oba Olaoye on March 23, 2026, accusing the former senator of gross misconduct, insubordination, and persistent disrespect toward the throne.
The suspension, communicated through a letter signed by palace secretary Toyin Ajamu, aimed to protect the dignity and authority of the traditional institution.
Speaking at the press conference, Adeseun expressed his refusal to reconcile with the Soun, condemning divisive policies that, he claimed, pit Ogbomoso residents against each other on religious grounds.
“The issue of religion should not divide our people. Christians and Muslims in Ogbomosoland have coexisted peacefully for decades.
My wife is Christian, I am Muslim, and we have lived in harmony for 42 years,” he said.
Adeseun also called for the judicial system to handle ongoing disputes, particularly regarding the Chief Imam, Ayilara.
He emphasized that the Soun should not act as judge in matters pending in court. “If the court decides to remove the Chief Imam, the ruling should be accepted. We must all uphold the rule of law,” he added.
The resignation marks a significant development in Ogbomoso’s traditional and political landscape, highlighting tensions between local leaders and the royal institution.
Analysts suggest this could affect community cohesion and political alliances in the state.
