National News – Former governors from Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone have unveiled a new platform aimed at strengthening regional development and supporting governance in the region.
The group, known as the South-East Former Governors Forum, was officially launched on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, in Enugu State, bringing together past political leaders committed to advising current administrations and promoting strategic growth across the zone.
The forum was unveiled during a meeting attended by several prominent political figures, including the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who played a key role in the launch.
According to a statement issued by the minister’s media aide, the forum is open to all former governors from the South-East region, regardless of their political party affiliations.
Speaking at the gathering, Umahi explained that the forum was created to provide advisory support to sitting governors on key regional and national issues.
He noted that the initiative seeks to encourage collaboration among experienced leaders who previously governed the states in the zone.
Umahi disclosed that some former governors were unable to attend the inaugural meeting due to overseas engagements and medical appointments.
However, he expressed confidence that more than 90 percent of former governors from the region would participate in future meetings as the forum gains momentum.
The minister also commended the current governors in the South-East for their ongoing efforts toward development and improved governance in the region.
He said the forum intends to work closely with them to address shared challenges and accelerate economic and infrastructural progress.
In addition, the forum praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s infrastructure initiatives and key political appointments involving individuals from the South-East.
Members of the forum acknowledged that these developments have contributed to increased federal attention to projects within the region.
The group emphasized that its primary goal is to strengthen unity among political stakeholders while providing strategic guidance on policies that affect the South-East and Nigeria as a whole.
Among dignitaries present at the meeting were former governors Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, and Chris Ngige of Anambra State.
The delegation also paid a courtesy visit to Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah during the event.
The forum plans to hold regular meetings and expand participation in order to foster cooperation and sustainable development across the South-East region.
