National News – Lagos Island Local Government recently hosted the 2026 Gelede Festival at Ilupesi Ground, Isale-Eko.

The event drew residents, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts to experience traditional masquerades, drumming, and performances that celebrate Lagos Island’s rich history and heritage.

Chairman Taiwo Oyekan emphasized the importance of preserving indigenous traditions while fostering unity within the community.

The festival, which began on April 3 with the “Efe Night” at Oju Irowo Square, featured music, satire, and dramatic performances that set the stage for the main celebrations.

Organizers highlighted the Gelede Festival as a platform for promoting cultural pride, social cohesion, and tourism.

Visitors witnessed symbolic masquerades linked to the Alaketu lineage, honoring women—“awon iya wa”—believed to hold spiritual and social influence.

Traditional rulers, Lagos White Cap Chiefs, community leaders, and stakeholders attended, reflecting broad support for heritage preservation.

Lamidi Adio, Olorefe of Gelede Alaketu, praised initiatives that sustain community traditions.

Mazeedat Raji added that such cultural events enhance Lagos Island’s global visibility and safeguard historical values for future generations.

The 2026 edition of the Gelede Festival stands out for increased public interest and recognition, providing both entertainment and education about Yoruba customs.

Organizers noted that the festival’s continued celebration promotes unity, strengthens cultural identity, and boosts local tourism, making it one of Isale-Eko’s most significant cultural events.
