National News – Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared his intention to tackle Nigeria’s pressing challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on a Channels Television programme on Friday, Amaechi said he is running for president because he understands the country’s problems and possesses the experience needed to solve them.
His comments come as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the polls scheduled for January 16, 2027.
Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and a key figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), highlighted his record in infrastructure development, particularly rail and port projects executed during his time in office.
According to him, these achievements demonstrate his capacity to deliver results if given the mandate.
He also claimed to have contributed to efforts aimed at addressing insecurity while in government.
The former minister criticised the administration of Bola Tinubu, stating that economic conditions have worsened under the current leadership.
He noted that many Nigerians are struggling with rising costs of living, including food, fuel, and transportation, adding that public dissatisfaction continues to grow nationwide.
On the political landscape, Amaechi alleged that there are attempts to weaken opposition parties, warning that such actions could undermine democracy.
He urged institutions like the Independent National Electoral Commission and the judiciary to remain independent to ensure credible elections.
He further insisted that if the ADC fields a strong candidate, the ruling party could face defeat in 2027.
Amaechi is among several prominent politicians positioning themselves for the presidential race, alongside figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rauf Aregbesola.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed party primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026, during which candidates are expected to emerge.
