Fernandes Targets Historic World Cup Triumph for Portugal

National News – Portugal captain and Manchester United midfielder has expressed confidence in his country’s chances of winning the FIFA World Cup, saying the team’s ultimate goal is to bring the prestigious trophy home for the first time in history.

Speaking ahead of Portugal’s opening Group K match against in Houston, Fernandes said the squad is determined to build on its recent successes, including victory at UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2025 UEFA Nations League.

“The dream is to be world champions,” Fernandes said. “The key is to focus on what we can do to change the fact that Portugal have never won it and become the first side to bring the coveted World Cup back home.”

Ranked fifth in the latest FIFA rankings, Portugal enters the tournament among the favourites, behind only , , and .

Portugal’s best World Cup performances came in 1966 and 2006 when they reached the semifinals. The team is now seeking to surpass those achievements under head coach .

Fernandes also praised veteran forward , who is set to participate in his sixth World Cup at the age of 41.

“It is a huge privilege to have Cristiano as a teammate and compatriot,” Fernandes said. “His winning mentality, resilience and desire to achieve more continue to inspire the team.”

The midfielder noted that Ronaldo’s record 228 international appearances demonstrate the dedication required to remain at the highest level for two decades.

Fernandes added that Portugal hopes Ronaldo can once again play a decisive role by scoring goals and helping the team move closer to achieving its World Cup ambition.

Portugal reached the quarterfinals at the previous World Cup before being eliminated by and will be aiming for a deeper run in this year’s tournament.
