President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, raising the pay of military personnel by between 30 and 80 per cent in a move aimed at improving troop welfare and boosting morale.
The new salary package, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit about 250,000 personnel across the Army, Navy and Air Force.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the salary adjustment was designed to favour lower-ranking personnel with the highest percentage increases.
According to the new structure, officers from the rank of Brigadier-General to General, including those above the rank of Colonel, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from Colonel to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while those from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The review will increase the Armed Forces’ annual salary bill from N660 billion to N924 billion, representing an additional N264 billion in government expenditure.
President Tinubu said the decision was in recognition of the sacrifices made by military personnel in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising troop welfare and modernising the Armed Forces through improved equipment and advanced technology.
Tinubu stressed that security remains the foundation of national development, pledging continued mobilisation of military and law enforcement resources to safeguard lives and property.
He urged members of the Armed Forces to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their dedication and service to the nation.
“We shall prevail over those who seek to undermine the peace and unity of our country,” the President said.
The salary review is expected to strengthen morale among military personnel and reinforce ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity across Nigeria.
