National News – Popular Nigerian actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has defended her decision to kneel while greeting elders at public gatherings, insisting she will continue the practice for people she believes deserve the gesture.
The actress made this known on Saturday, April 11, 2026, in a post on X, formerly Twitter, after a fan criticised her habit as unnecessary and demeaning.
The debate began after a viral video from the 70th birthday celebration of former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, showed Abraham kneeling before notable figures, including businesswoman Shade Okoya and her husband, industrialist Rasaq Okoya.
Critics claimed the act undermined Abraham’s status, arguing that kneeling so deeply — sometimes needing help to stand — diminished her dignity.
A fan, identified as Lady Victoria, publicly urged Abraham to stop the habit, stating that some of the women she greeted were not significantly older than her.
The fan also referenced Abraham’s political stance during the 2023 elections, suggesting that public forgiveness over past political controversies should encourage her to move with more self-confidence.
In her response, Abraham said she would not change her behaviour, emphasising that kneeling is a personal sign of respect deeply rooted in cultural values.
She added that she only kneels for people she believes truly deserve honour and that she will not abandon the practice due to public opinion.
The incident has sparked a wider debate on social media about cultural traditions, respect, and personal identity.
While some praised Abraham for preserving traditional Yoruba values and showing humility, others argued that respect can be expressed without what they perceive as excessive gestures.
