National News – Bola Tinubu has nominated Joseph Tegbe as Nigeria’s new Minister of Power, a move aimed at strengthening reforms in the country’s struggling electricity sector.

The nomination was announced on Thursday through a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga and has been forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

The decision follows the resignation of Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down in March 2026 to pursue the Oyo State governorship race ahead of the 2027 elections.

His exit was in line with a directive requiring political appointees seeking elective office to resign.

Tegbe, an indigene of Oyo State, brings over three decades of experience in fiscal policy, governance, and economic reform.

He previously served as a senior partner at KPMG, where he led major advisory initiatives across Africa.

Currently, he is the Director General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, coordinating development efforts between both countries.

According to the presidency, the nomination is expected to boost ongoing reforms, improve national grid stability, and attract sustainable investment into Nigeria’s power sector.

Tegbe has also worked closely with key regulatory bodies, including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company, giving him hands-on experience in energy sector transformation.

The President expressed confidence that, if confirmed, Tegbe will leverage his expertise to deliver improved electricity supply and drive institutional reforms.

His previous role as Chairman of the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee in 2025 further highlights his experience in executing large-scale government policies.

The nomination comes at a critical time as Nigeria continues to battle power shortages, infrastructure challenges, and investor concerns.

Analysts say Tegbe’s appointment could mark a turning point if reforms are effectively implemented.
