National News – Diego Simeone has applauded Ademola Lookman for his energetic display despite Atlético Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal F.C. in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night in Madrid.

The match, played at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, saw both sides share the spoils in a tightly contested encounter.

Arsenal took the lead just before halftime when Viktor Gyökeres converted from the penalty spot.

Atlético responded through Julián Álvarez, who also scored from a penalty after a VAR-confirmed handball decision.

Lookman, returning from injury after missing two league fixtures, played the full 90 minutes and delivered a strong all-round performance.

The Nigerian winger completed 95 percent of his passes in the opposition half, created one key chance, and registered four shots, with two on target.

Although he missed two clear scoring opportunities, his work rate stood out throughout the Champions League clash.

Defensively, the former Atalanta star made five vital contributions, winning two tackles, recording two interceptions, and blocking one Arsenal attempt.

He also won seven of his ten duels, helping Atlético contain Arsenal’s attacking threats.

Speaking after the game, Simeone praised Lookman’s growing tactical discipline and defensive awareness, describing him as an increasingly important figure in Atlético’s setup.

The result leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the decisive second leg at the Emirates Stadium next Tuesday.

Arsenal will look to capitalize on home advantage, while Atlético will hope Lookman can inspire them to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in a decade.
