National News – Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerian workers of improved welfare, pledging that the National Assembly will push for a living wage and better working conditions.

His message, delivered on May 1, 2026, marked the celebration of International Workers’ Day and addressed growing concerns over the rising cost of living across the country.

Speaking through his media aide, Akpabio acknowledged the economic hardship affecting workers nationwide, including inflation and wage sustainability challenges.

He emphasised that the 10th National Assembly is committed to enacting laws that directly improve workers’ lives.

According to him, legislative efforts will focus on fair wages, safer workplaces, pension reforms, and policies that encourage job creation.

He highlighted that the recently passed National Minimum Wage Act and other welfare initiatives demonstrate the Senate’s commitment to labour-friendly reforms.

Akpabio stressed that these measures are designed to ensure dignity for workers and strengthen economic productivity across all sectors.

The Senate President also called on employers in both public and private sectors to prioritise the well-being of their workforce.

He noted that improved working conditions are directly linked to higher productivity and national development.

From teachers and healthcare professionals to farmers, artisans, and civil servants, he described Nigerian workers as the backbone of the nation’s economy.

Akpabio further commended organised labour unions for their role in advocating workers’ rights, promising continued collaboration with groups like the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.

He assured that workers’ voices would remain represented in policymaking processes.

The statement comes amid increasing public discourse around economic pressures facing Nigerians.

With inflation rising and purchasing power declining, many workers have demanded urgent reforms to ensure sustainable livelihoods.
