National News – Lagos State University (LASU) spends over N200 million every month on electricity, according to the Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule.
He disclosed this on Friday, May 1, 2026, during the sod-turning ceremony of a new student hostel project at the university’s main campus in Ojo, Lagos.
The revelation highlights the growing financial strain caused by unstable power supply and heavy reliance on diesel generators.
Sule explained that the huge monthly cost covers both electricity bills and diesel used to power generators across lecture halls, hostels, and administrative buildings.
He noted that the situation has significantly reduced funds available for academic development, infrastructure upgrades, and student services.
The commissioner added that managing such recurring expenses has become increasingly difficult due to competing financial priorities within the university system.
Also speaking at the event, Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the Federal Government is investing heavily in infrastructure across tertiary institutions.
He disclosed that about N100 billion has been allocated in 2026 for hostel construction nationwide, with additional funding bringing the total to nearly N200 billion.
The LASU hostel project, a 1,500-bed facility, is being developed through a public-private partnership.
It will include modern amenities such as a library, gym, and recreational spaces.
With LASU’s student population estimated at 84,000 and only about 7,000 existing bed spaces, the project aims to bridge a significant accommodation gap while improving living conditions.
