National News – Tensions escalated on Monday as Iran warned the United States against interfering in the Strait of Hormuz, describing any such move as a violation of the ongoing ceasefire.

The warning followed an announcement by US President Donald Trump that American forces would begin escorting commercial vessels through the strategic waterway under a new initiative called “Project Freedom.”

The development comes amid stalled negotiations between Washington and Tehran since the ceasefire took effect on April 8.

Iran has maintained a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz—a vital global shipping route—after recent US-Israeli strikes on Tehran.

In response, the US has imposed countermeasures targeting Iranian ports, deepening the standoff.

According to Trump, the escort mission is aimed at ensuring the safety and welfare of stranded crews aboard hundreds of ships caught in the blockade.

He stated that US forces would deploy guided-missile destroyers, aircraft, and thousands of personnel to secure safe passage for vessels facing shortages of food and supplies.

However, Iranian officials have strongly opposed the move.

A senior lawmaker warned that any US involvement in the strait’s maritime operations would be treated as a breach of the ceasefire agreement.

Iran has also reportedly issued a one-month deadline for negotiations to reopen the waterway and end hostilities.

The Strait of Hormuz plays a critical role in global energy supply, and its closure has already driven oil prices up by nearly 50 percent.

European leaders have urged both sides to pursue diplomacy, warning of severe economic consequences if the crisis continues.

Analysts say the situation remains fragile, with both nations exchanging threats while diplomatic talks show little progress.

The coming days will determine whether “Project Freedom” eases tensions or triggers further confrontation in one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical hotspots.
