National News – Umo Eno has announced that the upgrade of Victor Attah International Airport to international status will boost regional connectivity, enhance tourism, and simplify travel across West Africa.

The governor spoke on Sunday in Uyo after returning from the airport’s maiden international flight to Ghana, marking a key milestone for the state-owned facility.

Eno explained that the development eliminates the need for Nigerians to travel outside the country before connecting to neighbouring destinations.

He noted that the achievement followed years of infrastructure upgrades, regulatory approvals, and aviation sector collaboration.

According to him, the improved airport capacity will position Akwa Ibom as a hub for business, tourism, and regional trade within the Gulf of Guinea.

The governor credited past administrations, including Victor Attah, Godswill Akpabio, and Udom Emmanuel, for laying the groundwork that led to the airport’s transformation.

He described governance as a relay effort, where successive leaders build on existing achievements.

Highlighting economic benefits, Eno revealed plans to expand aviation infrastructure, including a cargo terminal, second runway, and aviation village.

He also announced the creation of a Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development to oversee sector growth and ensure sustainability.

The governor further disclosed that Ibom Air will expand its fleet to 10 aircraft, with an additional Airbus expected soon.

He said the state has invested in human capital, training pilots, engineers, and aviation personnel both locally and internationally to support the sector’s growth.

Eno thanked Bola Tinubu and Festus Keyamo for facilitating the airport’s international certification.

He added that scheduled international operations will begin fully after final regulatory processes, positioning Akwa Ibom as a competitive destination for global conferences and investment.
