National News – The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on Monday unveiled a newly built Agro Rangers operational base in the Kanawa Forest Reserve, located in Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, as part of efforts to secure agricultural assets and tackle farmer–herder conflicts.

The project, commissioned on May 4, 2026, was initiated by the Gombe State Government with support from the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes project.

The facility includes residential accommodation, solar-powered electricity, and a motorised borehole to ensure continuous operations in the remote forest area.

Speaking at the event, the Gombe State NSCDC Commandant, Jibrin Idris, explained that the Agro Rangers unit was established to protect farmlands, ranches, silos, and forest reserves while also mediating disputes between farmers and herders.

He noted that the base would serve as a forward operational centre to provide round-the-clock security for nearby communities, particularly Kwadon, and surrounding agricultural zones.

Idris said the initiative was a strategic response to rising security challenges affecting agricultural investments and food production.

He added that the Corps aims to enforce zero tolerance for illegal logging, encroachment, and violent clashes within the corridor.

The commandant also highlighted the importance of collaboration, urging residents to work closely with Agro Rangers personnel and adopt peaceful conflict resolution methods through the Corps’ Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms.

Two motorcycles donated under the project were also commissioned to improve mobility and enhance rapid response during patrol operations.

Government officials described the development as a major step toward strengthening food security, protecting livelihoods, and promoting environmental sustainability in Gombe State.

The base is expected to improve safety for farmers, boost agricultural productivity, and reduce tensions in rural communities.
